Historic Stays and Fine Furnishings

Appraising the stories behind the rooms

Historic Stays & Fine Furnishings is a place for people who love old hotels, beautiful rooms, and the stories behind the pieces that fill them.

We’ll wander through grand lobbies, quiet inns, and once‑in‑a‑lifetime suites, but we won’t stop at the front desk. Posts will explore:

  • Historic stays and the architecture, décor, and people that give them character

  • Fine furnishings, from hotel case goods and lighting to standout pieces from estates and notable designers

  • Furniture designers and makers, with short profiles on their history, style, and why their work still matters today

Because I’m an appraiser, some posts will touch on how these items are valued in today’s market—what holds value, what surprises us, and how condition and provenance change the story. Other pieces may include interviews with hotel management or the chef, a look inside a renovation, favorite house recipes, or small bits of hotel history and fun facts I pick up along the way.

Not every furnishing will come from a hotel. Some will be drawn from private estates, auctions, or designers’ catalogs, especially when a chair, table, or light fixture tells a story that fits the spirit of the blog. Sometimes I’ll focus on a single object; other times on a whole room, a property, or the person who designed it.

If you enjoy historic places, well‑made furniture, design history, or you’re simply curious about what these pieces are really worth, you’re in the right spot.
