Pre-Loss Insurance Appraisals

Protect what you have worked hard to build before a loss occurs. The Peterson Exchange – Auctions & Appraisals LLC provides pre-loss insurance appraisals and detailed inventory services for residential contents, business property, fine art, antiques, jewelry, watches, luxury goods, collectibles, furnishings, equipment, and other valuable personal property.

A current appraisal helps establish the appropriate insurance value of your property and gives you documentation to discuss coverage with your insurance agent or carrier. Whether you are protecting a single valuable item, an art collection, a luxury wardrobe, a full household, or business contents, we provide organized, independent documentation to help you prepare before a theft, fire, hurricane, water loss, move, or other unexpected event.

Are You Properly Covered?

Many homeowners assume their policy automatically covers everything inside the home at full value. In reality, standard homeowners policies often contain special limits or sublimits for high-value property such as jewelry, watches, fine art, antiques, firearms, silver, collectibles, computers, and business property kept at home. The exact coverage and limits depend on the individual policy, but standard policies commonly impose low limits for certain categories—often around $1,500 to $2,500 for jewelry theft coverage, for example.

A pre-loss appraisal can help you identify property that may need to be separately scheduled, insured under a valuable-articles policy, or discussed with your insurance professional. We do not sell insurance or interpret coverage, but we can provide well-supported valuation documentation to help you have an informed conversation with your agent or carrier.

Our Pre-Loss Appraisal Services

Our services may include:

  • Insurance replacement-value appraisals for fine art, antiques, jewelry, watches, designer goods, coins, collectibles, firearms, luxury items, and other valuables.

  • General household-contents appraisals for furnishings, décor, electronics, appliances, tools, and personal property.

  • Business-contents appraisals for office furnishings, equipment, inventory, artwork, fixtures, and other business personal property.

  • Collection appraisals for art, jewelry, coins, sports memorabilia, collectibles, and specialty property.

  • On-site or remote appraisal examinations, when appropriate to the assignment.

  • Supporting photographs, descriptions, identifying details, market research, and value conclusions.

  • USPAP-compliant appraisal reports when required by the intended use and scope of work.

Your report can provide an organized record of what you own, its relevant characteristics, and its estimated value as of the appraisal date. This information can be invaluable if documentation is needed after a loss.

Stand-Alone Inventory Services

Not every client needs a full appraisal. We also offer stand-alone home and business inventory services for clients who want a detailed record of their belongings before a loss occurs.

An inventory may include room-by-room photographs, item descriptions, make and model information, serial numbers when visible, condition notes, and client-provided receipts or supporting records. A complete inventory creates an important starting point for future insurance claims, estate planning, moves, downsizing, and household organization.

Inventory-service pricing is based on the size of the property, including square footage, number of rooms, volume of contents, and the complexity of the collection or business property. Contact us for a custom quote.

A strong inventory should include photographs, descriptions, identifying information such as make, model, or serial number, receipts when available, and current replacement-cost information for significant items. Keeping a backup copy outside the home or in secure cloud storage is also important.

Post-Loss Appraisals and Inventories

If a loss has already occurred, we can help document what was damaged, destroyed, missing, or stolen. Our post-loss services may include insurance appraisal assignments, damaged-property evaluations, replacement-cost research, and forensic loss inventories.

A forensic loss inventory is especially helpful when a pre-loss inventory was never created. Using available photographs, videos, receipts, prior appraisals, family records, moving documents, room layouts, witness information, surviving fragments, and client interviews, we work to reconstruct a detailed inventory of lost or damaged personal property.

Post-loss assignments may be appropriate for:

  • Fire, smoke, water, mold, hurricane, or storm damage.

  • Theft, burglary, vandalism, or unexplained disappearance.

  • Moving and storage losses.

  • Damage to fine art, antiques, furniture, jewelry, collectibles, or luxury property.

  • Residential and business property claims.

  • Estate, legal, fiduciary, and bankruptcy matters requiring property documentation.

Each insurance carrier has its own claim requirements, policy terms, and approval process. Our role is to provide independent appraisal, inventory, valuation, and documentation services; we do not guarantee claim approval, coverage, or payment.
